in the meantime here’s some eye candy from http://www.travelandphotography.com.au/ -
north west usa

Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, USA this is one of the many images i took when touring the western half of the usa. north of seattle this area is more sparsely populated and can be very wet and bleak. not this day though. port townsend is cute little town. to see more images from the usa click on this

subiaco

I have just started a project to document in images, the essence of Subiaco an older suburb of Perth Australia. 3k’s from the city, it was settled in 1851 by the Benedictine monks of Subiaco Italy and is full of characteristic homes from the turn of the 20th century to the 1930’s it also has its fair share of characters. This is Mary who has lived in a our street for over 30 years and she had a few choice things to say about life today. I’ll add more as I go. -
scatter guns
i was at a dinner the other night and got talking to a couple of guys who had recently been travelling with their wives both of which (their wives that is) were keen photographers. they both said that there wives took literally ‘000’s of images. one actually has her camera set on auto bracketing and took 100,000 on a 5 month outback road trip. how much i thought! i wouldn’t shoot anywere near that amount in that time span.
like most ex film photographers i still believe in the philosophy of trying to make every shot count. apart from my strong believe that i get much better images by taking less, i also hate to spend any more time in front of a computer (doing what is now image development) than i need to. i’ve heard similiar tales around the photographic community and i guess you need to see the best images from this scatter gun approach to make a conslusive comment. the image below is a scanned slide and I probably only took about half a roll of film (18) on this subject matter

havana!
we had a week in havana last year. what a place! music is everywhere mostly what’s called son, made popular worldwide by buena vista social club. there was a band in every restaurant, every club, every bar and on on almost every street corner. this guy playing the bass was part of a band playing in an outdoor restuarant in old havana.
old havana looks in parts like beirut must have done after its civil war – derelict! worried about pickpockets no! worried about debris falling on your head si! si!
but let me tell you about ken! eating a superb pork dish in “la bodeguita del medio” and in walks two cubans and a man in a kilt with a chivas regal shirt on. they sit down opposite us and began a conversation in spanish, the guy in the kilt has an unmistakable scottish accent (or was it tone) which was really weird as i wouldn’t reconise a spanish dialect – hard enough reconising the language! anyway long story short the guy in the kilt was ken who was from edinburgh and the regional manager for chivas (or their owner pernod ricard). he was here to promote chivas regal which at $100 a bottle i would have thought would have been out of reach for 99.9% of the rum loving cuban population. but as ken said “there are poor communists and there are rich communists”. you can see more images of havana and surrounds here. -
mexico!!
last year we spent a few weeks in mexico. we were there for dia de muertos (the day of the dead) festival which was fascinating.
there were only two photographic challenges for me in mexico:
what not to shoot and to make sure that we did the country and its people justice. you’ll find some of our best efforts here.
this one of a catrina (skeleton or skull) was taken in guadalajara, mexico’s second biggest city and arguably the most mexican. its the home of tequila, mariachi music and the mexican hat dance.

passion!

continuing on from my last post vision i came across a post from this photographer ralph velasco “passion: question your way to finding ours“. this is thought provoking for anybody in almost any walk of life not just photography.
whilst you are on his site check out his 101 tips book – really good for travel photography beginners and enthusiasts.
this image of a group of men playing games and chatting was taken in kathmandu, nepal. -
vision
in the last couple of weeks i have had the opportunity to listen to two guys who use the word “vision” a lot.
i went to see jordon belfort “the wolf of wolf street” live and despite my skepticism i was inspired. his take on having a vision rather than specific goals, which you somehow never acheive, was food for thought.
the other guy I listened to on a twip (this week in photo) podcast was david duchemin a canadian photographer who also spoke about vision but this time in relation to image making. his saying “gear is good but vision is better” is also food for thought.
you’ll find david here.
the image here is the wailing wall in jerusalem. jewish people (mostly men) go there with their eskys (cool boxes) and chairs for a day of prayers.
hope to have more middle east images on our travel photography website soon. -
the beauty of croatia
the next set of images we posted to our site katin images were taken in croatia. any one who has been there will tell you it is a beautiful country with a spectacular 1800km coastline hugging the adriatic sea.
our time was divided between split and dubrovnik, split being a modern town embedded with a roman palace, whilst dubrovnik, typical of many european towns, has an fortfied old town surrounded on three sides by the more functional ‘newer’ areas of town. so it wasn’t much of a challenge to find photogenic spots.
the only challenges were to put down the camera and enjoy the ambiance of two different cities and to try and take some original shots, which i believe we acheived. this one is taken from the ramparts that enclose dubrovnik old town.
by the way with all the posted images just click on them if you want to see a larger view.
you’ll find more croatian pictures here -
tour du mont blanc
the tour du mont blanc is a 11 day 170km circular walk. it can be gruelling one minute as you ascend or descend but incredible the next as you reach a summit and feel that you are within touching distance of either a glacier or just a sheer wall of rock that towers above you. from a photography angle it sets all sorts of challenges, of which climate, terrain, and just sheer exhaustion were three. we were lucky to experience superb weather all the way through and managed to come home with several thousand images of which a selection can be found here.
