Chillies at Pike place markets, Seattle photo
I love Seattle. It’s arguably the food capital of the USA and has one of the greatest markets outside Europe in Pike place, home of the great theatre of fish throwing. Aside from that it has great produce and is a joy to wander and taste the morsels on offer. Seattle is also famous for coffee, of course, Boeing and Microsoft. A little know fact is that is the best place on the planet to have a heart attack due to the number of Defibrillators it has strategically placed in and around the city. The fact it has a couple of international manufacturers who make them in Seattle would certainly have something to do with it, wouldn’t you think?

Day of the dead models in San Miguel de Allende Mexico photo
On a previous post on San Miguel de Allende I mentioned that I was there for the day of the dead (Día de los Muertos) festival. Everywhere you go in Mexico in the weeks preceding the festival, you will find various incarnations of skeletons from full size to these small models I came across in San Miguel’s market. The origins of the skeleton used in this festival are a bit hazy but are considered to be as recent as the 18th or 19th century when a newspaper published a poem about a cemetery. Whatever the reason is, it makes for a colourful and almost macabre sight. 1/60 @ f4 75mm ISO 250

A little bit of Mostar

Street vendor One of Mostar’s many street vendors © 2010 Nick Katin Our trip to Croatia started in Split and ended in Dubrovnik via a small sojourn in Mostar in Bosnia Herzegovina. What a place that is! Almost destroyed in the Balkans war through really no fault of their own. Caught between two enemies Bosnia became the theatre of war and somehow it has managed to raise itself from the its own ashes.
It’s a beautiful town with friendly and interesting people.

Travel Different – Verona two

Italian statue Statue in Verona’s Piazza delle Erbe ©2010 Nick Katin The famous balcony is just off Via Mazzini where users of iPhones, compacts and DSLR’s blaze away hoping for that one different shot. Didn’t like my effort, so you won’t see it here!
What you will see here is the Madonna Verona (which actually dates from roman times) that sits on the fountain in the colourful Piazza delle Erbe. A small market sits in the Piazza next to the umbrellas and chairs that belong to the many cafes with fruit, veg and masks for sale for their carnival in autumn.

Travel different–London2

Old Spitalfields market East London, England © 2010 Nick Katin Strolling up and around commercial road in Shoreditch past pubs of old and Christ church Spitalfields, there are markets everywhere! Old and new Spitalfields, Petticoat lane, upmarket and further on Brick lane market. A hangover from the rag trade that used to be the main industry here many years ago. As you can there are still see plenty of “rags” even if the industry itself has died the slow death of ‘offshoring’.
