Lock display in Mexico City Cathedral
At the altar of Saint Nonnatus in Mexico city’s Metropolitan Cathedral is a display of hundreds (so it seems anyway) of padlocks all intertwined and locked together.
My instinctive reaction when I saw I thought was what is this all about? Actually it was a lot more colourful than that.
Well, it turns out that the said Saint Nonnutus is the patron saint of childbirth, midwives, children, pregnant women, and priests who want to protect the secrecy of confession. And the locks are placed at his altar to stop gossip, rumours, false testimonies and bad talk. They are also used to keep secrets, stop cursing or lying and to guard priests who want to protect the secrecy of confession. After placing a lock the person takes a seat in the main bench, for all to see.
How fascinating is that?

White church in Santorini
The local Cycladic architecture in Santorini is spiced up with white washed houses literally hanging from the cliff. This is not a house but in fact a church.
Many of the churches on Sanatorini and in fact on the islands of the Greek Cyclades have the famous blue dome, so this is a bit of an exception.
Apparently the architecture is influenced by the occupation of the Franks and in particular the Venetians under who’s influence the islands flourished from 12th century.

Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona Arizona photo and Photo tip no 1
I keep getting requests for the odd tip or two on photography from people about to go travelling. So I thought I’d combine my normal post of travel photos with the occasional very short tip. First the photo of the Chapel of the holy Cross just out of Sedona and built into the bright coloured rock formations of the tableland. It’s a pretty spectacular sight, especially from the base. The wisps of high cloud drifting across the top give a eerie feel! 1/125 @ f8 24mm ISO100
And so to the tip – if you want to grab a shot at any time keep your camera ON. On both DSLR’s and compacts you need to disable the power saving option (you can always turn it back on later). For smartphones the camera app needs to be on or at least on your home page.
